Alfa Romeo has recently made waves in the automotive industry with the successful completion of EPA testing for their highly anticipated model, the Alfa Romeo Tonale. This plug-in hybrid C-SUV has proven its mettle, boasting an impressive electric range and remarkable performance characteristics. With this latest release, Alfa Romeo demonstrates its commitment to embracing greater electrification while staying true to the brand’s renowned performance heritage.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale achieved an official electric range of 33 miles during the EPA testing. This means that many customers will be able to handle their daily commutes without relying on the fuel tank, thanks to the Tonale’s electric capabilities. Larry Dominique, the Senior Vice President and head of Alfa Romeo North America, expressed his satisfaction with the results, emphasizing that this milestone represents the beginning of Alfa Romeo’s transformation towards greater electrification.
One of the key contributors to the Tonale’s exceptional performance and efficiency is its advanced powertrain system. Under the hood, the Tonale features a 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 180 horsepower. This engine supplies torque to the front wheels, ensuring a dynamic driving experience. To enhance efficiency and smooth transitions during the drive cycle, a high-voltage Belt Starter Generator is mounted to the engine. This generator also enables seamless stop-start capability, further improving fuel economy.
The Tonale’s electric motor, powered by a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery, plays a significant role in its overall performance. Located on the rear axle, the 90-kW electric motor delivers an impressive 184 lb.-ft. (250 Nm) of torque from 0 rpm. When combined with the power generated by the engine, the Tonale achieves a best-in-class output of 285 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. (470 Nm) of torque. These figures ensure that the Tonale delivers the exhilarating performance expected from the Alfa Romeo brand.
In addition to its remarkable electric capabilities and performance, the Alfa Romeo Tonale stands out as the most efficient plug-in hybrid C-SUV in its segment. This achievement is a testament to Alfa Romeo’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology and engineering. The Tonale’s efficiency is further enhanced by its sleek design and aerodynamic features, allowing it to maximize range and minimize energy consumption.
