Qoros has been rolling out a steady stream of products since it first hit the scene a little over two years ago, but so far they’ve all been based on the same Qoros 3, just rendered in different forms. That’s where the Qoros 2 SUV PHEV concept departs from its production counterparts.
Presented as promised at the Shanghai Motor Show, the Qoros 2 concept is envisioned as a B-segment subcompact crossover to compete with the likes of the Nissan Juke and Fiat 500X. The design is a mix of Chinese and German, with a muscular stance featuring wheels pushed out to the corners, a dynamic roofline and imposing vertical lights clusters front and rear. It also incorporates little Chinese Easter eggs throughout, from choice of colors and the bamboo used in the interior, to the QR code embedded in the glass roof and the spoke inlay that pays tribute to the Year of the Goat.
Motivation comes courtesy of a plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs an unspecified small-displacement turbo engine powering the front wheels to a pair of electric motors on the rear axle. There’s a pop-up charging port embedded at the base of the windshield, similar to a fighter jet’s mid-air refueling appendage, and underfloor inductive charging plate as well.
Overall the concept signals a promising (albeit potentially divisive) direction forward for the Sino-Israeli automaker. Now it’s just a matter of seeing how much of the show car makes it to market in China and abroad with Qoros’ ambitious plans to expand beyond its home-market’s borders.
