When you get a flat tyre and have to stop at the side of the road, you need to replace that tyre quickly. Hopefully, you will have a spare in the car. But it’s no good having a spare if you don’t know how to get it on the car.
Here’s how to remove the old one and put the new one on in a quick and easy manner.
Take Off the Cover and Loose the Nuts
First of all, make sure that no one is in the car, put it in gear (or in park if it’s automatic) and apply the handbrake. After that, the next thing to do is take the wheel cover off the wheel with the flat tyre. Then you can loosen the nuts on the relevant wheel a little. This action will simply make the job a little easier later on, but it’s not vital.
Place the Jack and Raise the Car
When you’re doing this, you need to be very careful. If you place the jack in the wrong place, you could cause some serious damage to your car. You need to place it on flat ground underneath a reinforced area of the car’s sill. This is generally found below the base of where the car door opens. Once you’ve done that, raise the car up.
Remove the Nuts and Then the Wheel
If you don’t know how to remove the nuts on the wheel, then you could consult car repair manuals. They should tell you what the best way to do it is for your car. Generally speaking, you should simply be able to use a wheel wrench to remove the nuts. Then you just need to grip the tyre with two hands and pull it towards you.
Put the New Wheel in Place and Secure the Nuts
When the old wheel is off, you need to put the new one in place. This is not too difficult to do. You simply have to reverse the action that you carried out when taking the old wheel off. So, you lift the new tyre and push it onto where the old one was. And then you can secure the nuts with the wheel wrench.
Lower the Car and Tighten the Nuts Again
Then you can lower the car by using the wrench, and the job is nearly done. Put the jack away once the car has all four wheels on the ground, and everything is secure. When this is done, you need to tighten the nuts again. This will make sure that everything is as safe and tight as it can be.
Replace the Wheel Cover
The very last thing that you will need to do when you can get back on the road is replace the wheel cover. This completes the process. But you should probably still take the car to a mechanic and the soonest opportunity. They will be able to check that everything is safe and make any changes that need to be made.
