There were rumors that General Motors was set to debut two new SUVs at the North American International Auto Show next month, and we can now confirm that one of these will be the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. GM’s largest crossover was getting a bit long in the tooth, having debuted way back in 2008 as a 2009 model, so a complete redesign has been expected for a while. Aside from this teaser image, Chevrolet is holding back details for the Traverse until the auto show in January.
The three-row, eight passenger Traverse should feature more room than the previous model, which was already one of the most generous on the market. The current Traverse shared a platform with the previous GMC Acadia, although the Acadia grew smaller with its redesign. That leaves the Traverse and the rumored Buick Enclave followup as the largest crossovers in GM’s lineup. While Chevrolet won’t give details, it’s claiming the best third-row legroom of any crossover on the market. Look for an updated design inside and out that slots in with Chevrolet’s current styling language.
Chevrolet, and the automotive industry in general, has been shifting its focus towards ever more popular crossovers. Chevy even wants you to believe the fantastic new Bolt EV is a crossover (it’s not). Even though the current Traverse is one of the oldest vehicles on the market, sales have been holding strong, only slightly dipping year over year. This will be one of the most important vehicle debuts for 2017, and Chevrolet can’t afford to flub it.
